Description
This is another boredom craft job I did. I made a whole set of these - 6 placemats and 6 coasters, all painted by hand.
The coaster has the katakana symbol of "Dragon" on it, which took me a few minutes of practice on newspaper to get right.
I drew the dragon freehand in my sketchbook first, then traced it onto the wood. That dragon is hard to draw freehand six times.
Time taken: 2 - 3 days
Materials: 6 plywood placemats, 6 plywood coasters, cheap paint brushes, acrylic paint, spray-on clear sealer.

lol, thats not katakana, thats Kanji. Katakana is the ones they use for foreign words while hiragana is for the original japanese words. Kanji is the 'borrowed' chinese characters.
